What We Do

The CBNRM Forum and its member Associations organize their work around four thematic areas that strengthen community conservation and improve livelihoods.

Governance

Building strong, inclusive, and accountable governance systems within member associations — ensuring women, youth, and marginalized groups actively participate in co-management and decision-making.

Conservation

Integrating landscape management across land, water, wildlife, forestry, fisheries, and agriculture. Includes environmental education, reforestation, and co-management of parks and reserves.

Livelihoods

Investing in people as a smart conservation strategy — promoting sustainable livelihoods that reduce pressure on protected areas while improving resilience and income security.

Rights, Equity & Justice

Promoting inclusive, rights-based conservation approaches compatible with international human rights frameworks.

Who We Are

The CBNRM Forum is a national network and umbrella body of Community Co-Management Associations that amplifies local community voices in national and international conservation policy spaces. We help ensure that conservation delivers real benefits for both people and nature by promoting inclusive governance, rights-based conservation, human rights protection, and gender justice.

Our Coverage

The CBNRM Forum and its members cater for 3.8 million people living within 15 km of Malawi’s national parks, wildlife reserves, and forests — collectively managing over 1.8 million hectares of forests on customary land and  0.5 million hectares of protected areas buffer zones held in trust by Traditional Authorities.
